Rethymno, the third largest city in Crete after Heraklion and Chania, has a population of 33,000. It is a city with many attractions and a good tourist infrastructure. It is located in the same area as ancient Rithymna and there is evidence of its existence from as early as the 5th century B.C.

To get to Rethymno you must go to Chania or Heraklion, and from there travel by car or bus. This is because the city has no airport and the port is not directly linked to Piraeus, the main port of Athens. The distance from Chania is 65 km and from Heraklion it is 80km.

• Old town
  The old town is very picturesque and beautiful. It’s full of shops, nice restaurants, cafés and bars and is busy all hours of the day, from early morning until late at night. The narrow streets are very neat and green, which gives its own style and color to the city. On the left side is the old port, where the restaurant tables are placed just above the water.
• Fortezza fortress
  Fortezza is a Venetian fortress which dates back to 1573. A characteristic feature of this structure is its straight walls of large width and outer slope that connect the ramparts. Fortetza was designed by the architect Sforza Palavitsini and it took more than 107,000 Cretans under forced labor to construct it. The view of the city from up here is spectacular.
• Archaeological Museum of Rethymno
  The exhibits of museum give a historical overview of the cultural history of the city from the Neolithic Age to the Roman period.
